FLY HIGHER

“Life is a beautiful journey and let’s together, Fly higher!” Keeping this thought in mind, around 25 volunteers of the NGO Fly Higher India paid a visit to the Bosco Boys Home in Borivali on October 28 from 10.30 am to 1.00 pm, to spread smiles to the ones who really deserved it. The NGO Fly Higher India (FHI) is an initiative of Apmvm Foundation, a Not-for-profit organisation. Started in end of 2017, the initiative soon spread to various cities and impacted lives of thousands of children and involved hundreds of volunteers.  Its aim is   to  inculcate life skills, instil values, and imbibe confidence among the underprivileged children and youth across India. They do so by  using recreational and educational tools , making them  better prepared for adult life . The volunteers had educational and funfilled activities planned for the children. BOSCO BOYS HOME AN INSPIRATION TO OTHERS!!!

On 27 th October 2018, the NGO Samajik Vikas Kendra from Malad (East) led by the head of the Institute Mr. Sachin Mahore visited Bosco Boys Home, Borivali as part of their educational and exposure visit from 11 am to 2pm. The other staffs present were Mr. Sachin Mahore, Mrs. Kavita Rana, Mrs. Archana Rathod, Mrs. Trupti Tayde, Mrs. Sarla Nair, Mrs. Aarti Gayor the Social Development outreach worker, and the Superintendent Mrs. Sangita Karande. This meeting was organized by Mr. Datta Gade the coordinator of the Social Work department of BBH. Deacon Romero Dsouza, the Vice Principal and the Perfect of Studies of the BBH welcomed them and introduced the Management and Staff of BBH to the staff of Samajik Vikas Kendra. Addiction A Problem To Be Tackled!!!

On 24 th October, 2018 from 9am to 5pm, Don Bosco Balprafulta, organized a Seminar ‘How to Handle Addicted Children and ‘Juvenille Justice Alliance Meet’ at Don Bosco Provincial House, Matunga. The main resource person for the programme were: Fr. Thomas Koshy the National YaR Director & Pioneer of Juvenile Justice Act, Fr. Xavier Devdas the Director of Maria Ashiana Lonavala, Dr.Sunita Shanbhag, Mr. Vijay Shankar and Dr. Asha Mukundan. Two staff Mr. Eustace Fernandes, the Educational Supervisor and Ms. Meena Kini the Counselor from Bosco Boys Home also attended the session. 85 members from 27 NGO’s from all part of Mumbai took part in this social awareness forum. STAYING FIT THE MALLAKHAMB WAY!!!

The boys of the Bosco Boys Home, Borivali were introduced to Mallakhamb, a traditional  Indian  sport as a way to stay fit and healthy on October 21. It is a sport, in which a  gymnast  performs aerial  yoga  postures and  wrestling  grips in concert with a vertical stationary or hanging wooden pole, cane, or hanging rope. The word Mallakhamb itself refers to the pole used in the sport. While explaining to the boys the importance of this sport, Moreshwar Ingole, the Maalakhamb instructor said, “This is the only sport that provides optimum exercise to the entire body in the least possible time. Besides giving perfect shape and form to the body, it also gives remarkable control over the limbs. Due to continuous twisting and turning, the whole body gets messaged and every cell is rejuvenated. WIN OVER OUR VICES

Dussehra is a Hindu festival that celebrates the triumph of good over evil. Dussehra is the culmination of the  Navaratr i festival. It is a nine day celebration, a major season cultural event, which includes public celebration of  c lassical and flolk dances  of Hindu culture. The boys of Bosco Boys’ Home (BBH) in Borivali also participated in this celebration which encourages the good to triumph over evil and also reminds us to win over our vices on 17 th October. As Don Bosco always told his boys to be good, to do good, to see good and to practise goodness. The boys rose to the sound of Garba music and had a Guajarati special breakfast of Dhokla for the morning. After returning from the school, the boys were welcomed with music and coconut water and Chinese bhel…specially prepared by Dn. Romero and his team to munch. PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT WORK SHOP

Jannat Media Production in collaboration with Bosco Boys Home, Borivali organised a workshop on Personality Development for the children of the Orphanage on 14 October.   It was an enlighting session conducted by the recourse person Ms. Pratima Karmarkar. In all there were 20 participants for the programme. Stressing the importance of developing ones personality, Ms. Karmarkar said, “Personality development grooms an individual and helps him make a mark of his/her own, Personality development goes a long way in reducing stress and conflicts and helps you develop a positive attitude in life. It helps an individual to inculcate positive qualities like punctuality, flexible attitude, willingness to learn, friendly nature, eagerness to help others.” Dn. A SESSION ON SAAJA OR SUDHAR

An enlighting session on the topic Juvenile Delinquency was conducted by Dr. Chaya Shah, Adv. Aarti Shah and Ms. Sabina Gonsalves for the students of Bosco Boys Home and Technical Institue, Borivali on 12 th October 2018. In all 125 students participated in the programme. Dn. Romero D’Souza, the Vice Principal of the Institute, welcomed Dr. Chaya Shah and her team. Dn. D’Souza thanked them for their kind initiative and service offered to the institute. The session was organised as part of the many initiatives and awareness programmes conducted for the students to help them mature into good human beings. The session started with Dr. Chaya throwing light on few of the Juvenile Delinquency cases that left her stunned, stressing that materialism has taken over emotions and left no humanity and overshadowed it with violence and aggressiveness. HEALTH IS WEALTH

World Mental Health Day is celebrated every year on 10 th October. This year, the theme was ‘Young People and Mental Health in a Changing World’. As part of its educative programme, Bosco Boys Home, Borivali organised a ‘World Health Day’ awareness programme for their boys on 10 October to make them aware of the importance of keeping themselves fit and fine. 38 boys participated in the session along with the staff. Ms. Meena Kini, the Counsellor for the boys conducted the session with the help of few creative videos on mental health, explaining and making the boys understand about the basic idea behind mental health, and how it is reflected in one’s daily life. The signs and symptoms, the prevalence and occurrence along with treatment and interventions were highlighted upon in her talk. DREAM…DISCOVER…DAZZLE…

“ Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.” This we can see through the NGO: ‘ Bhumi’ one of India’s largest independent and youth volunteer non-profit organisations. Founded on August 15, 2006 by a small group of friends with a strong passion to change society and build a better India for tomorrow.  The organisation provides youngsters a platform to serve the society and bridges the gap between the educated and the uneducated by initiating a number of educational activities especially for the underprivileged children as to improve the self-confidence of children and to contribute to their holistic development through promotion of extra-curricular activities. As part of their annual national talent festival ‘Nakshatra;’ Bhumi organised various competition in arts for children from 12 different orphanages around Mumbai this year on 7 th October. Bosco Boys Home, Borivali was also invited to be part of this festive Oratory.  

TREK TO BOSCOWADI

MUMBAI, OCTOBER 06, 2018 : Boscowadi located at Gorai Beach, Sawant Wadi, has always been a picnic spot for all those who wanted to spend quality time together for having fun and some moments of laughter and get together. On October 06, the Hotel Management Batch of Bosco Boys Home and Technical Institue, Borivali, spent a memorable day at the nature-friendly resort at Boscowadi as a parting gift as they move ahead to their next level of training as part of their course. 25 students along with the staff set out early in the morning.  The journey itself was very interesting because of the singing, the goda-gadi riding and other fun all along the way. The day was filled with events such as trekking, games such as football and volley ball, rain dance, swimming and to top it all with a sumptuous lunch (chicken curry, pulav, dal fry and roti). SPECIAL CLASSES CONDUCTED BY THE SALESIAN LAY BROTHERS

On 4 th   and 5 th of October, 2018, The four wheeler section of Bosco Boys Home and Technical Institute had a special session of 2 hours each conducted by the Salesian Lay Brothers: Br. Titus D’ Mello and Br. Anthony D’ Souza. Both the Brothers are an expert in this field and have a sound technical knowledge and experience of 30 years teaching the young skills and trades and turning them into skilled and good citizens of the country. Currently Br. D’ Mello is helping out in the administration of Don Bosco School and Jr. College, Borivali and Br. D’ Souza is helping out the community of Walvanda to run the Technical School. The session on the 4th of October was taken by Br. D’ Mello in which he explained to the students the basic components of an automobile and the growth which took place in the automobile industry compared to the last 20 years and the future expected growth and new initiative to be explored by this industry. PUNJABI THALI SPECIAL

The Hotel Management department of Bosco Boys Home and Technical Institute, Borivli organised a Punjabi theme lunch for the staff on October 05. In all 30 students from batch number 33, joined forces in preparing the theme lunch under the guidance of cookery teacher, Sonali Cheulkar and food and beverages service lecturer, Deepak Lala and the bakery teacher Cora Soares. The lunch was divided into three courses namely starters, main course and desert. The theme lunch is a tradition wherein every batch of the Hotel Management department, applies all the theoretical and practical knowledge which they acquired during the course, into use. The planning for the theme lunch began well in advance and the students were taught to cook the dishes and desserts during the cookery and bakery classes; and were prepared for service, during the food and beverage service lectures. GUARDIAN ANGEL: A SERVANT AND MESSENGER OF GOD

St. Augustine once said, “Angel” is the name of their office, not of their nature.  If you seek the name of their nature, it is “spirit”; if you seek the name of their office, it is “angel”…” With their whole beings the angels are servants and messengers of God (CCC #329). We at Bosco Boys Home (BBH) Borivali began with the Holy Eucharist celebrated by Fr Adolph Furtado sdb wherein we prayed for all brothers in Practical Trainee especially to our guardian angel – Cl. Jittin Varghese. In his homily, Dn Romero shed light on the presence of being a Salesian to the mission entrusted by the congregation. The children at BBH greeted brother with the singing of Happy Feast at Breakfast and was welcomed with greetings from his beloved community.
