PRAY FOR KERALA


On 24th August, 2018 from 4.30pm to 5.30 pm a special prayer service was conducted at Bosco Boys Home, Borivali for those who have lost their lives in the rains and floods and those who continue to suffer in these natural calamities in Kerala the southern state of India, “God’s Own Country. In all 120 boys from Hotel Management, RAC, 4 wheeler, 2 wheeler and from Yamaha sector along with the staffs took part in the prayer service.

The purpose of conducting this service was to remember the flood victims of Kerala state who had lost all their property and their relatives in this natural disaster. The state affected by intense rains, which led to flooding and landslides and heavy losses of human lives, numerous missing and displaced people, and extensive damage to crops and houses.
The prayer service began with a small video in which all the disasters were shown - each slides depicting the sufferings of the people in Kerala. The catastrophe led to the death of more than 370 people, left over a million people homeless and caused unprecedented destruction to both private and public property. After which, the students spend some time in silent meditation reflecting upon the pain and loss of the people in Kerala. A prayer of the faithful was recited by the students at the end of which they were asked to help out in whatever way they could in the rescue operations in Kerala by means of money, stationery, clothes, and food grains.

There was a similar prayer service conducted for the boys of the orphanage in the evening, where they were made aware of the devastating happenings in Kerala.

After the prayer service Fr.Corlis Gonsalves, Rector of the Bosco Boys Home, Borivali made an appeal to all the boys and staff to show their solidarity with the flood victims in Kerala. He spoke in depth about the plight of the Kerala and requested all to support them in this hour of crises.  He extended his prayers and condolences to the families of those who died in the heavy rains and floods. He gave an extraordinary example of the Indian Army who gave their best whenever the nation is in emergency. He gave the example of Bombay terrorist attack in which Indian Army played the significant role of saving the city and again now in Kerala they were doing the same.
He said, “The Don Bosco Community of India are planning to support the flood victims. We as a Don Bosco institute invite you to contribute to the relief funds for the people of Kerala. I assure you that God will bless you for your generosity.”

A campaign for the flood victims of Kerala was initiated with the small gesture of keeping a Money Box in the campus, where the management, staff and the students could contribute to help those in Kerala.

I AM THERE FOR YOU

Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi , is a Hindu festival centred around the tying of a thread or ornamental bracelet on the right wrist as a form of bond and ritual protection between brother and sister. The day signifies the mutual bond of love between siblings. On the 26 th of August, 2018, a group of volunteers visited Bosco Boys Home, Borivali on this sacred occasion of Rakshabandhan. Amid the sound of light instrumentals and a prayerful atmosphere, the volunters one by one began to apply tilak to the forehead of the boys and to tie the sacred thread of Rakhi to the wrist of the boys and did arati praying for their good health and long life. One of the volunteers explained, “This thread, represents love and sublime sentiments, is called the ‘Raksha Bandhan’ which means ‘a bond of protection’.” Keeping the tradition of the brother offering a gift to his sister and vows to look after her.
